2009 Taxidermy Project

I thought that I wouldn’t have a problem getting a deer to work on this year, since we had a few decent bucks running around our place this year. We took the nice buck that Ryan shot to a real taxidermist and the only other deer we shot were a button buck and a doe. I didn’t need another doe mount and a button buck mount wasn’t high on my list either.

I did want to do a taxidermy project this year to keep the knowledge in my leaky mind and also to try to do things a little better. Fortunately a friend from church had a project for us. He had shot an eight point buck that he didn’t think was big enough to pay to have mounted, but it was his first West Virginia buck and he wanted to try to mount it. His desire to mount the deer himself and our desire to work on a project fell into place.

This fellow is no stranger to skinning and tanning deer hides so he came with a good bit of knowledge and it was nice to be able to take a break from the work and let someone else make some progress.

The cape had been cut off in front of the shoulder so a shoulder mount was not possible. I had never been a fan of neck mounted deer but I’ll have to admit that it didn’t turn our too bad.

Hopefully we all learned a little more about the art of taxidermy and hopefully the quality of this mount is good enough to be proudly displayed for many years.
