December 2nd Deer Season Journal

Saturday was the last day of buck season here in West Virginia.

I started the day out at about 9:00 AM, after catching a little extra sleep, by taking a walk out the old logging road. There was a small seven point buck at the feeder near the middle food plot. I had the opportunity to get a good look at this buck since he didn't spook right away.

I headed on out the road to the second feeder at the oldhouse where a spike was eating. He let me walk up pretty close to him. He has a twisted spike on one side that reminds me of a horn on an African animal. I also got to watch him for a while.

After putting our digital game cameras back and setting up a blind I took up a seat in the blind at the middle food plot/feeder area. I was hoping to get a look at the wide eight point buck that had shown up in several pictures over the last week.

I'll have to admit that I didn't even take a gun with me. Over the past several years I've never seen a buck on the last day of buck season that didn't make it through the rest of the season unharmed. I just wanted to see a buck and the bigger the better even though I didn't take a gun.

Fortunately the wide eight point showed up about 4:10 PM. He's been the largest buck I've had the opportunity to see so far this year. He looks to be 16 plus inches wide but the longest tines are probably only about five inches long. The rack isn't especially heavy either, but he looked awful good after seeing so few bucks this season.

After he left I was satisfied and quickly took my blind down and headed home.

Here is a close up look at our wide eight point buck.
