Whitetail Deer Hunting Season Journal
Buck Season

Welcome to the Whitetail Deer Hunting Season Journal for November 21st, the first day of buck season. We’ll be hunting all week so watch for the updates for each day.

Monday

Digital scouting camera pictures finally caught the biggest 8 point from last year. This year he is a 9 point and we got pictures of him on three occasions at two of the feeders.

At one feeder he showed up at about 2:00 PM and 4:00 AM in the morning. He showed up at 4:45 PM at the other feeder.

I was hoping to get a look at him this morning but I didn't see any deer at all. I arrived at the new feeder location at 6:35 and stayed until 9:30. I couldn’t resist spending the first morning in the spot where the 9 point had showed up twice.

I spent the rest of the morning setting up a blind near the oldhouse food plot and feeder. This, of course, was the other location where this deer showed up. I stuck around until about noon.

In the afternoon I camped out in a blind from 2:30 to 5:30 near the oldhouse hoping to see one of the 9 point bucks but was only visited by a doe, young doe and a spike.

The weather was real nice, starting in the 30's and rising into the 50's.

Although I didn't see many deer it was a great day to be outside.

We also got pictures of the new 8 point that we first saw last week. I'd like to get a look at him. He looks like he's still a young deer but his rack looks pretty wide.

I didn't see any signs of the rut. None of the scrapes had been freshened and I didn't see any kind of chasing activity at all.

The weather is supposed to get colder and it is going to snow; maybe this will get deer moving tomorrow.

Nine point whitetail buck

This is the buck I’ve been looking for all fall. It doesn’t look like he has good genetic potential for antler width but you can tell he is starting to get older by his sagging belly.
